What does Sex have to do with Grief?

When we grieve, we often find ways to feel better temporarily. We are feeling so much pain and the normal human wants to avoid pain at all costs. By finding what we (grief Recovery specialists) call a short-term energy relieving behavior, like Sex, you can cause a temporary hit of dopamine or serotonin in the brain to feel better for the moment. Sex is not the only way to accomplish this ( sterbs for short ) can be drugs, alcohol, food, exercise, work….the list goes on. These behaviors can be harmless and even helpful short term. However, when we replace dealing directly with our grief effectively, by learning skills and corrective action to take, these short-term behaviors can turn into long-term addictions. No one wants to feel pain, unfortunately grief is a normal part of life. We must find healthy ways to process the feelings that come with a significant loss.
